Since 2018, hundreds of startups have participated in the Kering Generation Award. Meet the winners and learn how their projects support sustainability and innovation to craft tomorrow’s luxury.
In December 2018, Kering launched the Kering Generation Award to ignite cross-industry collaborations and empower the next generation to find and scale innovations for sustainable and ethical fashion – in particular those that identify alternative raw materials, foster green supply chains, reinvent customer engagement and address the circular economy.
In partnership with fashion accelerator Plug and Play, the Kering Generation Award is now approaching its fourth award ceremony in China and has been expanded into Japan, Saudi Arabia, and the global jewelry sector.
Hundreds of entrepreneurs and startups have already participated in the competitions. Meet the winners and learn how their projects support sustainability and innovation.
Presented in Shanghai during Fashion Week.
Theme: Supply Chain Issues, focusing on chemicals and clean water in production.
Winners:
#1 - Melephant, provides natural dyes from organic waste in a circular, no-waste system.
#2 - Heyuan, uses its proprietary innovative water treatment technology for printing and dyeing.
#3 - FeiLiu Tech, offers supply chain optimization through AI that allows for small batch runs to avoid overproduction.
Theme: “Biodiversity and Beyond,” focusing on biodiversity restoration and conservation in the fashion industry.
Winners:
#1 - Peelsphere, creates material based on renewable seaweed and plant and fruit waste.
#2 - OTEX, concentrates on soil health and cultures processes.
#3 - Zeno Technology, uses its new generation biotechnology to cover the whole process from dye production to printing.
Theme: "Coming Full Circle", focused on developing a circular business model using the “5 Rs” - redesign, reuse, recycle, regenerate and recognition.
Winners:
#1 - Yi Design, uses high-value ceramic waste across its entire supply chain, giving new life to non-recyclable ceramic fragments.
#2- PhaBuilder, uses cutting-edge synthetic biotechnology to develop innovative materials such as PHA from non-food biomass waste.
#3 - Cobbler's Suggest, combines digital tools and leather repair artisanship in their innovative business model of after-sales care services
Presented in Tokyo, The Kering Generation Award in Japan was launched in 2024 in partnership with global innovation platform CIC Institute.
The trophy for the first Japanese edition -- made of 3D-printed recycled ceramic fragments. -- was created by Yi Design, laureate of the third edition of the Kering Generation Award in China.
The competition was divided into two sub-themes: "Alternative Raw Materials & Manufacturing Processes" and "Retail & Consumer Engagement."
A special prize was awarded to Micro Bio Factory for its progress during the selection process. Recognized for its bio-indigo technology tackling environmental and social challenges in Japan’s denim industry, the startup aims to decarbonize chemical manufacturing through biomass-derived and recycled raw materials.
Theme: "Sustainable Fashion & Beauty", focused on startups addressing the key stages of a product's life cycle: alternative raw materials, manufacturing, retail, and customer engagement.
Winners:
#1 - Fermenstation Co., Ltd., uses fermentation technology to transform food waste into natural aromatic essences without new resource extraction, thus promoting a circular economy with plant-based functional ingredients.
#2 – AMPHICO, creates innovative PFAS-free breathable waterproof textiles, aligning with US and European regulations, and also using its unique dyeing algorithm to create 1,000+ colors with just six threads, thus potentially reducing the environmental impact of textile dyeing.
#3 - Algal Bio, a bio-venture with applications in healthcare, beauty, and fashion draws on Japan’s marine micro algae, using algae’s functional ingredients and natural pigments to create anti-aging, UV protection, and hydration products.
Presented in Riyadh, launched in 2024, in cooperation with the Fashion Commission within the Saudi Ministry of Culture, the Kering Generation Award X Saudi Arabia seeks to promote sustainable practices and support visionary fashion initiatives that shape a responsible future for the Kingdom’s nascent fashion sector.
Theme: Customer engagement, circular economy, and water protection.
Winners:
#1 - Darah Solutions Lab, a sustainable fashion startup whose operations include a recycling and local production facility, transforms textile waste and discarded clothes into new creations.
#2 – Amused, Saudi Arabia's first and biggest community marketplace for pre-loved luxury items, uses AI to ensure product authenticity and connect buyers and sellers.
#3 – Asteri, a desert-proof clean beauty brand made of locally sourced ingredients; B-Corp certified, vegan, microplastic-free, and cruelty-free, with 70% recycled packaging.
The Kering Generation Award X Jewelry aims at building an international community of young students and startups committed to advancing innovation and sustainability within the global jewelry industry. In partnership with CIBJO - the World Jewelry Confederation - and Poli.Design - Politecnico di Milano, the award draws on candidates from sector startups and 10 world-renowned universities and academies specializing in jewelry and sustainability.
Theme: 'Second Chance, First Choice,' explores unconventional materials and techniques to transform waste into something valuable.

Lee Min Seo, for Rhythm Reborn, a unique collection crafted from discarded leather of the janggu, a traditional Korean percussion instrument.
Startup Category
Ianyan, Chinese brand highlighting fractured opals and unusual stones through its collections, often overlooked in conventional jewelry for their raw beauty.
To be presented in Shanghai
Theme: “Pioneering Water’s Positive Impact in Luxury”. It will explore innovation around water stewardship across the luxury industry’s value chain through 3 different sub-themes: “Rejuvenate Earth Water Ecosystem”, “Navigate Industry Water Risks” and “Enhance consumers water consciousness and transform lifestyles”.
